Here's how it works – you gain followers here, you lose followers there.

But suddenly, one day you find that you have lost a massive amount of followers (hundreds or thousands) in a single day.

Panic!

Your hands are sweating.

You're wondering what could have gone wrong, with your account, content or followers. There is one thing that is true and you are right. A massive loss of followers is not normal. Thanks to our more than seven years of experience helping people gain quality followers on Twitter, we have detected the 10 most common reasons why you lose followers and how to solve it.

Gain real and organic Twitter followers

1. Twitter disables bot or fake accounts.

Twitter, with more than 206 million daily active users around the world, is fighting fiercely against bots and fake accounts.

They are prioritizing the credibility of the social network and downplaying the number of accounts that are created. What is the goal of this mass account deactivation? They are removing accounts from the network that could harm Twitter's reputation in the future.

This is excellent news for all those who respect Twitter rules, create valuable content, and promote their business correctly.

But you might be wondering: why is this related to my account?

Well, here I explain:

Those bot/fake accounts were following other accounts.

And, your account may have had dozens, hundreds, or thousands of such followers.

When Twitter disables these accounts, they disappear instantly.

So if any of these accounts were following you, you'll see a drop in your follower count overnight.

But don't worry too much, this is not dangerous for your account.

Here's a fun fact:

Not having these followers, on the other hand, is positive for your account and your content.

Your engagement rate is going to increase, and that's a good sign for your account.

Well, how can you detect if you have lost followers because of this?

How to detect them:

  • Quantify your losses, calculate how many followers you lost and over what period of time. If it was a massive drop from one day to the next, this is probably the reason for your loss.
  • Check the news, if it was a mass takedown of bot/fake accounts by Twitter, they will make it public to discourage those who create such accounts. Look in the news for articles like this one, this one, or this one.
  • Check out alternative news sites like Reddit, Twitter , and even Facebook. Search Twitter for the keyword 'Twitter disables bots' , 'Twitter deletes accounts' , 'Twitter bans accounts' , and see if there are more users complaining about this.

If you think that this is not the reason for your account losing followers, let's move on to the next point where we look at another common cause.

2. You are publishing outside of your topic

Getting involved in politics, sports, or any sensitive topic of discussion comes at a cost on Twitter.

A non-offensive reply or a favorite to a tweet that takes sides on a controversial issue can lose you a lot of followers.

Please note that when you give a fav, you are endorsing the tweet as if you had posted it yourself.

Also, promoting yourself when the network is focused on a sensitive topic can be negative for your account.

Twitter is like that.

Therefore, before posting a tweet, giving a favorite, or replying, analyze whether the topic in question is within your communication niche.

Do not use the same account for multiple purposes (e.g. personal and business).

In some cases, your personal opinions are not the same as those your business may have or take, and you don't want this to affect your following.

How to detect it:

  • Quantify your losses, calculate how many followers you have lost and over what period of time. If you lost followers after posting a tweet that touched on a sensitive topic, this may be the reason why you lost followers.
  • Use Twitter's search engine to find out if anyone is complaining about your account/content.

3. Your account is shadowbanned

As we mentioned at the beginning, Twitter is strongly fighting against accounts that could harm the network.

Not only are they using brute force to indiscriminately close accounts, they also have ways to silence some accounts.

Shadowban is a generic term that can mean different things.

In this article, we will go over the ghost ban that may be affecting your account's follower count.

What is Twitter ghost ban?

Basically what Twitter may be doing is hiding your tweets or replies.

Everything will appear to be working normally, but your followers may not be seeing your posts.

And that can lead to people unfollowing you because they think you're not posting enough.

This is a temporary block and may be due to abuse by the user posting too many tweets or following too many accounts in a short period of time.

How to detect it:

  • Check if you can see your posts in the timeline from an account other than your own. If you can't see your tweets, you are under a shadowban .

4. You are unfollowing very aggressively.

You are unfollowing many accounts in a very short period of time.

Your timeline is constantly updating with information that is irrelevant to you.

Twitter starts to affect your mood with bad news, unwanted posts, etc.

Enough.

Things have gotten out of hand!

You want to regain control of your account and timeline.

Now, you've decided to start narrowing down your audience a bit.

You are cleaning up your timeline, leaving only those relevant accounts that add value to your life.

Another day, another 100 accounts you unfollow, beautiful!

Now you're starting to take back control of your Twitter timeline.

But, BOOM ! Suddenly, you realize that in the process, you're losing followers

How did this happen?

Well, you didn't realize it initially, but some of those accounts were following you in exchange for you following them. The famous follow for follow strategy.

Now that you're no longer following them, they've automatically unfollowed you.

But here's a crazy fact:

Losing these followers isn't bad for your account at all.

If your followers don't interact with your content, what's the point of having them as followers?

You should aim to have a community of authentic, targeted and engaged followers.

Without interaction, there is no benefit to having them as followers.

As we mentioned before, it is better to have fewer engaged followers than to have ghost followers who will not interact or buy what you have to sell.

If you've found this to be the cause of your follower loss, slow down your unfollowing actions.

Continue cleaning up your account, but more slowly to avoid a drastic drop in followers.

Don't worry too much about that drop though, they weren't really your fans in the first place.
